It’s silly to suggest that anyone who is publicly threatened should be afforded government protection whether they ask for it or not. Democratic governments can’t force protection on people – unless they’re material witnesses to a crime. So yes, Dink did need to apply for protection, and evidently he didn’t do that. Moreover, it’s the height of silliness to say that “Convicting the five young men arrested for the murder will achieve nothing for the rule of law in Turkey.” Trying and convicting people for crimes they commit is as good as the rule of law gets anywhere. If that doesn’t satisfy the Dink family, then that speaks volumes to their innate vengefulness.

I am pleased you highlight this issue Chris. If comparative studies say anything, it is that the Ogiek, absent serious intervention, may go the way of the Batwa in Bwindi Mgahinga in Uganda or in the reinforests of DRC/Cameroon. The Ogiek need real capacity support to ensure that its leadership negotiates with the Kenyan state from a position of strength.

It amazes me that apparently so much of the world looks to the US for inspiration: moral, political, economic. While we have that sense of manifest destiny in our national DNA, the reality of our national affairs and international behavior makes us hypocrites. Or at least I have thought so. The wave of acclamation regarding the election of this American, with this very American story and optimism tells me that while I may not think we can be the moral leaders of the world, the world may want it otherwise.
